Wente Scout Reservation is a Nationally Accredited Boy Scout camp owned and operated by the San Francisco Bay Area Council , Boy Scouts of America and located in the Northern California town of Willits , 150 miles north of San Francisco. The camp was founded in 1959 by the Oakland Area Council and five years later opened in 1964 as a summer camp of the San Francisco Bay Area council. Over the years the camp has grown from just a few hundred Scouts the first year to well over 4000 Scouts and Scouters each summer. Wente Scout Reservation operates multiple week long sessions during the summer and each year we host thousands of Scouts from all over the United States including California, Oregon, Texas, Alaska, Massachusetts, Maryland, and Florida. To educate our Scouts we have a highly trained staff of coed youth and young adults from places like Oregon, Utah, Hawaii, Tennessee, Florida, even Taiwan, Chile, Egypt, and France, but mostly the Northern California area. The camp offers over 58 different Merit Badges, with the possibility of more being announced at camp, as well as many awards to earn and lots of activities to partake in that are just fun. As one of the largest Scout camps in all of California, Wente is comprised of over 2100 acres of private scout property. Wente Scout Reservation offers a chance to hike, backpack, sail, mountain bike, fish, ride horses, and go rock climbing all in one week. Scouts can try their hand at black powder musket firing, kayaking and rappelling. Expert instruction in popular outdoor skill merit badges will make the Scoutcraft area come alive. Wente is rich in wildlife and allows for the study of conservation, re- forestation, wildlife management, woodcraft and nature study. Rifle, shotgun, and archery shooting are also popular activities. The tall Douglas Fir, Redwoods, Madrones and golden meadows spell adventure for the Unit that likes to rough it and test their skills. Our private 80-acre lake is a great place for swimming, small boat sailing, boating, and canoeing, and it is considered one of the warmest lakes in the state. The lake also offers some prime fishin' with many trophy big mouth bass caught by both the expert and novice anglers alike. Wente also hosts three weekends of Family vacation camping during the year as well as other camping experiences for Cub Scouts and other organizations.
